Great article. I’m thrilled to see dogs being taken seriously as detectors (and helpers) in medical situations. This is an exciting field, full of potential!

Two summers ago I was staying with my brother and his two lab mixes. The dogs and I became close. One day I had to have all my upper teeth pulled. When I got home the dogs’ greeting was different. When I sat down on the couch Ryder was first to crawl into my lap and sniff aggressively at my face. I opened my mouth to let him sniff more and showed him my gums. He seemed to understand. Then Gracie had to do the same thing. After that Ryder stayed in my lap and Gracie at my feet if I went somewhere they stayed closer than usual following me everywhere. No major disease. No scientific breakthrough. Just two dogs understanding I was ‘injured’ and offering comfort. Yes, dogs can truly be amazing.
